About image converter
Converting an image is usually about size. WebP typically lands 25–35% smaller than an equivalent JPG at the same visual quality, which is why it is the sensible default for the web now that every current browser supports it.
This runs on your device using the browser's own canvas and image encoders, so the picture never leaves your machine. For photos and screenshots — which are so often personal — that is a meaningfully different guarantee from a site that uploads first and converts on a server.
Good to know
- The quality slider applies to JPG and WebP, which are lossy. PNG is lossless, so quality is ignored and its size depends on the image content instead.
- Converting to JPG flattens transparency onto white, because JPG has no alpha channel. Convert to WebP or PNG if you need transparency preserved.
- Re-encoding a lossy image always loses a little detail, even at quality 100. Convert from the original wherever you can rather than from a JPG that has already been through the process.
