About image enhancer
Most photo 'enhance' filters just sharpen edges, which makes a blurry face look crunchy rather than clear. GFPGAN instead uses a generative model trained specifically on faces: it recognises facial structure — eyes, skin texture, hair — and reconstructs plausible detail that a normal sharpening filter has no way to add back.
This runs on the server rather than in your browser, because the model itself is several hundred megabytes and needs more compute than a phone or laptop can spare in JavaScript. Your photo is uploaded only for the time it takes to process, then deleted — see the notes below.
Good to know
- Works best on photos where a face takes up a meaningful part of the frame. It's a face-restoration model, not a general photo upscaler — backgrounds are left as-is.
- Processing runs on ordinary server hardware with no GPU, so a photo can take up to a minute or two — noticeably slower than the instant, in-browser tools elsewhere on this site.
- Uploaded photos and results are temporary: stored only long enough to process and download, then deleted automatically. Nothing is kept or used for any other purpose.
